He had faced some of the same challenges I did. Knowing how much they had to work for it, and how happy they ended up as a result, helped me see that we could do the same. Whether you can find someone in your friend group, through social networking or even just watching relevant YouTube videos, hearing from people who have been where you are can serve as emotional support.
I waffled on changing my name — it felt really difficult for me, like I was letting go of my Indian heritage. Ultimately I decided against it , and my husband was supportive of my decision. Would it have been different if my husband were Indian? But, fear set in when they found that he deeply believed what he had been taught. I didn't freak and was not surprised. They came around quickly. Many people Childs has spoken to in the course of her research came from families who seemed very accepting, but feel differently about who their children date.
Her advice? Have an open and honest conversation before you bring your significant other into the mix. Prepare yourself for reactions that are unexpected or even upsetting, and accept that it may take some time for your family to come around. And if grandma just can't get on board? You can't force it. Acknowledge her feelings, but also acknowledge it's hurtful to you and your partner. More than 2 out of every 3 black women are currently unmarried, as are a majority of black men, and black women are 3 times as likely as white women never to marry.
College educated black women are twice as likely as their white peers never to marry, and a majority of college-educated black wives have less educated husbands. But racial gaps in marriage span the socioeconomic spectrum. At every income level black men are less likely than white men to be married. Indeed, by some measures, the racial gap is actually wider among affluent men than among their economically disadvantaged counterparts.
In most racial-ethnic groups, increases in income consistently translate into a greater likelihood of marriage. One way to understand these features of the contemporary African-American relationship scene is the gender imbalance at all income and educational levels. In lower-income groups, black men have fallen behind their female counterparts, victims of a criminal justice system that incarcerates them en masse, an educational system that fails them, and a labor market that offers few lawful economic opportunities for poorly educated men.
At any given time, more than 1 in 10 black men in their twenties and early thirties-prime marrying ages-is incarcerated. But there is also a shortage of potential partners for middle-income and high-income black women. Many of the union jobs and other work that once allowed male high school graduates to earn middle-income wages have vanished, even as jobs that traditionally employ females have expanded.
Twenty Hard Things About Being Married to a White Man - Longleaf Review
Only half as many black men as women complete college. The ranks of eligible black men are depleted further still by intermarriage: black men are 2 to 3 times as likely as black women to marry someone of another race, and economically successful black men are the most likely to do so. A desirable black man who ends an unsatisfying relationship will find many other women waiting.

Dating in India: The Do’s and Don’ts as a Foreign Woman
My parents are pretty traditional though and probably want me to marry a Indian girl- I'm not sure how they'd react to me having a black girlfriend. I really don't know what to do? Also has any one had any similar experiences? All advice would be much appreciated. I have seen many threads to do with interracial relationships but they don't quite seem to cover this.
